What can I expect that at my initial appointment and how long will it be?
Your initial appointment, can last anywhere from an hour to 2 hours. The most Important part of allergy evaluation is history, and this is an important part in diagnosing allergic diseases. Physical examination follows history, examination mostly focuses on the allergic component. After the consultation, Dr. Sharma will decide if you need to be skin tested for allergies, if you do have a history of asthma. We will also do a breathing test or pulmonary, function testing.

How his allergy testing done, does it hurt how long does it take?
The testing can be done by blood testing or by skin testing. In general skin testing is more reliable and accurate than the blood testing. However, there are times when we may need to order blood testing for allergies. Skin testing is mostly done on the back with individual prick devices testing for different allergens in both children and adults, children usually do not need as many skin testing as they haven’t been exposed to as many different things. It only takes a minute or 2 to apply and then we usually wait about 15 min. for the results. If you are allergic to something the area becomes little red like a little hive at that usually goes away within few minutes. We also do what is called intradermal testing which is done only when the prick testing is inconclusive or negative, it also takes only a few minutes and the results are read in 15 minutes.

Do you tests for food allergies?
Yes we do food testing, it is done on the back with prick testing, may include many different foods, test take couple of minutes to apply and read in 15 min for results.

At what age can a child can be tested for allergies?
We evaluate children and infants of all ages for allergies. However, we may not do any skin testing until the child is at least 2-3 years of age. At that time we may consider ordering blood work for allergy testing.

Should I wear to my initial appointment?
It is best to wear a short sleeve or sleeveless shirt. The testing is done on you’re back. We will give you gown to put on if Intradermal tests are needed they are usually done on the upper arms.

What happens next if I’m found to have allergies?
Dr. Sharma will discuss all treatment options at a summary visit we put all the data together, that includes history physical examination. Skin testing any other laboratory work. Different treatment options are discussed for different types of patients and what would work best for you.

Do I need to stopped taking certain medications before coming for skin testing?
Please look at the enclosed list of all the medications that primarily includes antihistamines. Certain over-the-counter medications, certain nasal sprays and eyedrops of initial visit.
